Three Easy Ways to Become a Super Affiliate and Earn Cash Quickly

Do you want to enjoy the comfort of working at home and be your own boss? Are you looking forward to making some extra cash every month? You can start a part-time or full-time business simply by developing an affiliate network on the Internet. If you are willing to puts loads of determination, persistence, communication, and organizational skills to achieve success then read on. Let me share with you the secrets of building your own affiliate empire with little or no start up cost.

Before starting up an affiliate empire, it is important to learn "Who You Are". Yes, this may sound weird, but you will appreciate learning who you are and what you want. What this question leads to may surprise many because if people are doing something that they really enjoy, they will do whatever it takes to wake up early or stay up late to get things done. Trust me! You will because you love what you do.

Once you know who you are and what you are passionate about, you can narrow your "circle of interests" to golfing, traveling, reading, knitting, sewing, eating, drinking, driving, diving, or practically any hobby or interest. Start by listing out the top 3 of your favorite hobbies and write them down on a piece of paper. Now, you have three pieces of paper with three favorite things that you love to do.

Go to your favorite search engine (Google, Yahoo, MSN, and others) to search for the keywords on each piece of paper. For example, you search for "travel". You will find a list of websites. Try "discount travel" or "world travel". Visit these websites and see if they have an affiliate program that you can join for free. Yes, these affiliate programs are usually free. You don't need to pay a dime to join because you are doing a good thing for the company. You are going to help them promote their website and bring in newer sources of revenues. Write down these websites and commission structure on the paper. Compare the payouts and find your favorite affiliate program. Sign up one or two affiliate programs only. Otherwise, you will have tons of emails drowning you in your Inbox. Now, pick one product in the affiliate program. This target product should give people unique value or help them to solve a problem. Once you determine your target product, you are ready to begin.

Whether you have little or no money to start your business, here are three easy ways to become a super affiliate:

1. No Budget Approach: Start at zero dollars by searching through your "circle of friends", including your family, high school friends, college friends, co-workers, employers, neighbors, and many other people whom you have met and known in the past three years. Create an email list if you have their email address. Otherwise, create a phone list with name and where you met them. Create a one-page sales letter or promotional flyer telling them why this target product is great for them. List out all the benefits in point form. Send out this warm message to your circle of friends. You are not cold calling. You are simply telling them how much value you want to give them. If you have picked a great product that you believe in, you will feel good promoting it. Follow up with them by a phone call. Basically, you need to touch base with your prospects at least 3 to 7 times to close a deal. Never give up. Keep trying. This is the most cost-effective way to start your business with no cost. When you make your first few transactions, you are ready to switch to a low budget approach.

2. Low Budget Approach: Set up a niche website that promotes your target product. A niche website means that you will attract buyers with special interests. For example, someone who is looking for a specific thing, like Hello Kitty, Superman, Wonder Woman; or, a specific solution, like growing hair on a bald head, toning muscles on arms and legs, and losing weight after having babies. Developing your website is easy. If you have good computer and Internet skills, you should just set up your own website with good sales copy. Setting up a website will cost you $100 to $500 a year. There are many cheap web-hosting solutions on the Internet, but every additional web tool you want is a new add-on cost. So, choose wisely. Ideally, you want to have the ability to set up a website in 10 minutes, and have the freedom to manage it anywhere around the world with just an Internet connection. When you have your website up and running, you are ready to promote your target product to your online visitors and earn some cash.

3. High Budget Approach: Promote your niche website is the key to success. However, it costs time, money, energy, and resources around you. You should budget your money wisely to minimize risks and maximize profits. Online advertising can drain you lots of money if you don't know how to track and measure return on investment. The ultimate goal is for you to build your own contact list or mail list, which you can use over time to sell to your prospects or members on various products of your niche interest. For instance, you may start selling skin care products for women. You grow your contact list in a few months and start adding on new beauty products like cosmetics, foundation for face, color eye shadows, lipsticks and make up brushes. Just an idea. Remember your mail list is your gold fountain with running water. Therefore, Focus on building your mail list with names and email addresses. You can use search engine keywords (e.g., Google Ad words). Or, you can just gather leads through different networking events in your local community.

Becoming a super affiliate is a number game. You have to focus on two variables: product price and market reach. When you have a high-ticket item, you don't need to sell as many to earn handsome cash commission. When you have a low-ticket item, you will have to sell many to earn the same amount of cash commission. The choice to determine what type of product and price range is comfortable in selling lies with you. If I can make a couple of hundred dollars in one transaction, I think it's great because it saves me both time and effort.

In terms of market reach, you will be successful only if you can reach out to a lot of prospects that are interested in your product. This means you have to determine in learning whatever you can to promote your website to target customers and close the deals with bonuses or unconditional guarantee. You need to learn how to write the best sales copy, how to keep your website up and running, and how to manage your own accounting. When you become a super affiliate, you can hire a personal assistant and a professional accountant to assist in all these tasks.

Take a minute to visit and learn one of the most affordable web solutions and one of the best super affiliate programs in the world.

This is where you come in. You can offer to advertise for them or sign up as an affiliate.

An affiliate program works by giving you a commission for every product they sold to every referral you directed to their website. Some affiliate programs will offer pay per click.

This means that if a visitor from your website clicks the link or banner of the company you posted in your site, they will pay you, if different people or users of your website make the clicks.

Since there are so many online businesses wanting to sign up websites as an affiliate, you will never run out of clients. There will always be new online businesses that will open up. If you do affiliate marketing right, you will never lose.

Affiliate marketing can be such a great business, especially for people who are considering starting an online business at home. With good internet traffic, your earnings in affiliate programs can be enough to make ends meet.

Affiliate marketing is a great business for every type of people. Whether you are an average person with a regular job or a student who wants to make extra cash or whether if you are a stay at home parent who wants to help with the household expenses, affiliate marketing is perfect for everyone.

All you need is a website and an investment of a little time, a little effort and a little money to get good internet traffic in your website. Sometimes if you are good in promoting your website, you need to invest no money at all.

Here are some of the reasons why affiliate marketing can be a great business:

To start with, you need no actual products or services to sell. Most people start their online business selling products or services; this can lead to spending more money, depending on what type of product or service they sell.

In affiliate marketing, all you have to do is create a website with specific topic and post a link of your affiliate that sells products or services that is relevant to your website topic. For example, you can create a website that discusses scuba diving equipments. You then put up a link in your website of other websites that sells different kinds of scuba equipments.

Depending on what kind of website you set up, you need no actual customer service. This means you have no need to employ people, therefore, saving money for salary and of course, office space.

You are your own boss. In addition, since that is the case, you get to choose what website you want to sign up as an affiliate. Remember that you have to choose a business that suits your website.

Affiliate marketing can give you lots of free time. What you need to do is just set up your website, advertise it and set up your affiliate program. After that, you have all the time in the world to do what ever pleases you.

However, you should also check your website and update it from time to time to keep visitors interested in your website. For example, your affiliate's products have upgraded, you also need to update your topics regarding the new features and products.

Once you have a good amount of internet traffic and subscriber list, you become an affiliate magnet. Businesses who depend largely on affiliate marketing to promote internet traffic to their website will often offer you to sign up for them as an affiliate. Sometimes, some businesses will even offer you a bonus by just signing you up as an affiliate.

These are just some of the reasons why affiliate marketing is a great business. There are many possibilities in affiliate marketing. All you have to do is be creative in promoting your website. Try to advertise your website by writing articles and posting them in article publishing websites, this is a great way to increase targeted internet traffic in your website.

In addition, keep in mind that internet traffic means more visitors who will likely buy the products your affiliate program is promoting.

For you to be successful in this field, make your website as attractive as possible. You not only have to get good web traffic but you also need keep visitors coming back again.

10 Affiliate Marketing Management Tips

Discover The Answer To The 10 Most Common Affiliate Marketing Management Questions

1. Is affiliate marketing right for my business?

Affiliate marketing is one of the most powerful and effective means of gaining new customers, regardless of your product or service. Affiliate marketing exposes your business to new customers and can get you out of your marketing rut. Additionally, when you initiate an affiliate marketing campaign, you're in control. You determine the commission rate you pay and pay only when your affiliates make a sale. It's a no loss operation for you because you only pay when a sale is made.

2. What are the startup costs?

When you start an affiliate program you have the choice of handling the operations yourself or having it managed by an affiliate network. The costs for either choice are reasonable and generally start around a few hundred dollars. Additionally, as a business owner don't forget that many of your costs may be tax deductible. To start an affiliate marketing program in house, costs will include:

Affiliate management software

Affiliate marketing support including a website that answers affiliate questions and a means for them to contact you if any issues arise.

Affiliate marketing materials including banner ads, copy, coupons, and promotional content.

An affiliate marketing contract agreement

Tracking software to track cookies, click throughs, payments, etc...

If you choose to hire an affiliate network to handle your program they generally charge a flat fee or a percentage of what you pay out each month.

3. How much time will it take out of my workday/workweek?

Most experts agree that it will take you about an hour and a half each day to manage your affiliate program. They also recommend you to budget more time in the first few months of your program, approximately two to three hours a day. Even the most efficient affiliate managers spend about 45 minutes a day managing their affiliate program.

Professional affiliate managers generally spend an average of 40-80 hours a month dedicated to managing, tracking and promoting your affiliate program.

4. Should I use an affiliate network?

Do you have an extra 3 hours a day for the next two or three months? Do you have an hour a day to devote to managing your program after the initial three month program is complete? An affiliate network, while it may be a bit more expensive on the outset, can help you focus your time on other profit generating tasks. Additionally, an affiliate network can help expose your affiliate program to a wide variety of experience affiliates, which means more money in your bottom line and more exposure overall.

That being said, there are a tremendous number of effective in-house solutions including some you're likely already familiar with like and These programs will help you stay 100% in control of your affiliate program and are effective at managing your program.

5. How should I pay affiliates? What type of commission works best?

This is a very important decision because it not only affects your profits, the right commission rate will help you recruit top-notch affiliates. The general rule of thumb is to set your default commission rate at a rate you can afford to pay while leaving room for time limited commission increase offers, promotions, and private offers. For example, if you can afford to pay 50% of your gross profit margin, pay 25% instead and tier it so that after a sales goal is reached they earn 30% or you can bump it up to 50% during the holidays or during typically low sales times.

6. How do I recruit affiliates?

Your customers may be your best affiliates. After all, they already appreciate and enjoy your products or services. A simple link on your website is a good place to start. Here are a few ways to find quality affiliates:

Online forums. These are excellent places to meet and greet and connect with like minded individuals. They're also a good resource for affiliates who are interested in, motivated, and qualified to sell your products and services. Using a forum, you can announce your affiliate program. Be careful to not 'sell' on the forum as most forums look down on this and may kick you off. Additionally, you can include a link to your affiliate site in your signature.

Find websites that link to your competitors and approach them about being an affiliate for you. Likewise, you can find affiliates using your favorite search engine and contact them about joining your program.

One last way is to join an affiliate network or become listed on an affiliate directory. This will ensure that affiliate marketers who are searching for new products and services to promote. However, keep in mind that many beginner marketers also seek products and services to promote via affiliate directories and they may lose interest and motivation before they ever make a sale. This isn't a strong deterrent because they don't get paid unless they make a sale, however it should be noted.

7. What is the best way to communicate with my affiliates?

Email is the general tool of choice, which makes an auto responder a fantastic tool for basic emails like the welcome email, introducing promotions, coupons, sending links and banner ads, and answering Frequently Asked Questions. It is also generally advisable to have an email address, fax number, and telephone number available for when affiliates have questions that are not answered by your frequently asked questions web page or when they simply want to speak with you.

8. How do I motivate affiliates?

Money motivates no doubt about it. That being said, affiliates are also motivated by feeling that they're important to you. This means when they ask for your time, you give it. Additionally, promotions, bonuses, prizes, contests, and commission increases are all tools to motivate and inspire affiliates. Constant communication, like sending a weekly or monthly Ezine, will also help remind your affiliates that you're out there and invested in their success.

9. Do I need to hire an affiliate manager?

The answer to this question really depends on your needs. How large is your company? Do you have the time to manage your program? Do you have the skills to manage your program? An affiliate manager is the person that:

Recruits affiliates

Communicates with affiliates

Develops, tracks, and reports on promotions

Develops programs to enhance affiliate program

Motivates affiliates

Tracks sales and pays affiliates

Monitors your competition

These are all extremely important functions and if you have the time to handle them yourself, excellent! If you do not, then consider hiring an affiliate manager.

10. How do I find/hire an affiliate manager?

Outsourcing an affiliate manager is fairly easy to do. There are hundreds available with a quick online search. You can ask associates, inquire at online forums, or post an advertisement seeking someone to fill the position. Depending on the complexity of your affiliate program, you could consider a well qualified virtual assistant for the job. The skills your affiliate manager will need are:

Organizational skills

Communication skills

Attention to detail

Knowledge of online business, internet marketing, and basic ecommerce operations

Basic html and graphic experience are a plus

Because they're going to be representing you, you'll want to make sure they're personable.

How To Sniff Out Bogus Affiliate Programs

There are few things more annoying than those moments when you've put in a considerable amount of effort, sweat, mental anguish and pain in promoting an affiliate program product just to get cheated out of your hard-earned commission by of all things the affiliate program itself!OUCH! Now that's a low blow indeed! Sure who doesn't know that there are and will always be wily marketers ready to pounce on your affiliate Id and swap it with theirs if you haven't disguised or cloaked it (and no this is not an article promoting affiliate cloaking software...all the ones I have ever bought never ever worked! If you truly want to mask your links for free go to But back to the problem on hand...getting conned by the affiliate program itself?

So let's break it down and see how this can happen. Let me add here that just occasionally by the way, such scenarios are the results of a mistake, but more often than not it is done intentionally. The real kicker though is that those websites offering affiliate programs designed to enrich the merchant yet leave you, the affiliate, out in the cold are legally well within their rights; i.e., you can't go blabbing to the web police crying foul play and expect any retribution or justice so the onus is on you to sniff out those sneaky merchants.

Case Of The 7-Day Affiliate Cookie Versus The 15-Day Free Trial!

Huh? A 7-Day cookie yet the merchant is offering a 15-day free trial! Can you see what's wrong with this picture? But just in case you don't, let me clarify things by explaining what cookies are. Simply put, a cookie is a harmless piece of computer code or script that captures harmless information (such as identifying a computer through current and subsequent visits, websites visited and date of visit). This is of importance to you because this is how a merchant can tell that a particular customer who purchased from them was referred by you, thus ensuring you get your commission. The importance of cookies does not stop there.

There're cookies and there are cookies! Cookies are coded to expire after a set period of time. So if a merchant supplies you (the affiliate) with cookies programmed to expire after 120 days, this means that if one of your referrals makes a purchase anytime within those 120 days, you'll get credited for that sale and get paid your commission. Remember, it generally takes at least several instances of exposure to a product before a person is ready to buy! So the longer lasting the cookie, the least from your point of view as an affiliate.

Right, so let's take a closer look at the merchant website that offered a 7-day cookie for its affiliate program yet at the same time offers its visitors a 15-day free trial period of the product. I'm sure you've caught on to the scam now...there's no way that you are going to get any commission because by the time the prospective buyer (who originated from your website through your affiliate link) is ready to purchase once their 15-day free trial is up, the cookie encoded with your affiliate link would have already expired!

So what can you do in such a case? If you really like the product and feel quite strongly about promoting it, you could contact the merchant and inform them that you'd love to promote their product but you happened to notice that they also offered a co-existent 15-day free trial period. Politely point out to them that that 15-day free trial effectively nullifies any possibility of you being able to generate any commissions with a 7-day affiliate-link cookie in place. Then graciously ask if they could extend the cookie duration to a 30-day period which should at least make it possible for you to actually get awarded your rightful commissions.

Nine times out of ten the reply (if you get any at all) is going to be NO unless you are a heavy hitter with an impressive volume of traffic or an extensive subscriber list...and if you also have evidence to backup your claims of heavy-hitter stardom . If, however, you still get a negative response or no response at all then don't waste any more time and simply move on and forget all about promoting that program, unless you are a natural born altruist (a selfless person dedicated to help others at no personal gain).

The Multi-Pay Option Game

This is another sneaky way in which you can be duped out of your rightful commissions, although this is not as deadly effective as the free-trial-period scam. Okay let's consider a scenario in which you're promoting an affiliate product listed at Click Bank (probably the largest online directory listing of digital marketing products available for affiliate promotion). A scenario such as this would have you send visitors from your site to the merchant's website via a link encoded with your Click Bank affiliate Id (the click bank Id is part of the cookie encoded with your affiliate information enabling them to distinguish that it was indeed you who referred the purchaser.)

In an ideal situation, the prospect who you referred would then purchase the product and hey you just got commission! But what if the sneaky merchant gives that prospective buyer another payment option on their landing page, such as payment through PayPal? Your referral might decide hmmmm, lemme use the funds in my PayPal account instead...and just like that your commission is gone! As I pointed out earlier, this method does not cheat you out of your commissions as effectively as the free-trial one above, because in this case you have a 50/50 chance of getting your commission but in the other case you basically have none!

The First Affiliate Programs

by Aazdak Alisimo

Affiliate programs are par for the course on the web these days, but have you ever wondered what companies were the first to take the leap and just how long ago that was?

Affiliate programs are unique in the world of business because they represent the evolution of the sales force in the brick in mortar world. A brick and mortar company has to advertise its products as well as hire salespeople to go out and move the product. It is an expensive effort. With affiliate programs, the process is so much simpler as practically anyone can signup for free to become an affiliate for a company and earn money on sales. It is a win-win in many senses.

As with many things on the web, the first affiliate programs were launched by adult sites. The adult industry is extremely competitive, which leads to it launching the first effective steps of most web technology including streaming video that eventually led to the likes of and so on. With affiliate programs, adult set the standard for a number of years before mainstream companies got their act together.

In 1994, CDNow was the first mainstream company to launch an affiliate program. The process involved music purchase programs. CDNow allowed affiliates to take music reviews and post them on their sites. When a consumer clicked a link in the review, they were taken to the site of CDNow. If they made a purchase, the affiliate was credited with a sale and revenue.

In 1996, the first big program really launched which was Amazon. It was similar to CDNow and offered affiliates the ability to put links to Amazon on their site. If people clicked through and purchased, the affiliate was credited with sales and revenue.

The story of affiliate programs is a fairly simple one. In one form or another, people click through a link on the site of an affiliate and the affiliate makes money if a desired action occurs. With some programs, the revue is derived from the consumer simply visiting the site while others require the visitor to provide certain information or, more typically, the consumer to make a purchase.

Affiliate programs have their problems and there should be no doubt in that regard. That being said, they still represent a win-win situation for companies and affiliates.

The 10 Biggest Mistakes That Will End Your Affiliate Career

  • Though it is possible to be successful with affiliate marketing programs, not everyone is able to make it. What are the reasons? Well, there are 10 of them, actually. Listed below are the 10 biggest mistakes that make being successful in affiliate marketing very elusive. Read them, study them and learn how to avoid them. Heeding these mistakes can spell the difference between monumental profits and dismal performance in your affiliate marketing campaigns.
  • The belief that people would just click on your affiliate links. Though an affiliate's job is mainly limited to pre-selling, pre-selling involves more than just displaying the affiliate links. It also entails encouraging people to click on them by enumerating the benefits that can be derived from the affiliate merchant's products, giving favorable recommendations about the use of the same, and providing an encouraging offer that would entice readers to check out the package.
  • Believing that there's such a thing as organic traffic. If I build it they will come. Organic traffic, or traffic that is naturally generated by a website, is a myth. There is no such thing as organic traffic! If you're hosting your affiliate links in one website, you can't expect people to find it just because it's there. You have to send them there or make them find it. This can be accomplished through effective SEO techniques and efficient marketing strategies.
  • Believing that employing one marketing strategy is enough. Some people actually think that submitting one article to the article directories would give them the amount of traffic they need. This is a fatal and costly mistake. Limiting yourself to a single, or even a couple, of marketing tactics would be limiting the number of visitors you could generate for your website. Also, you'll fail to tap into other segments of your targeted market if your marketing plan is not flexible enough to expand.
  • Failing to study and keep track of your campaign's performance. Most affiliates merely check on how much they have earned per day, and if such an amount remains at low levels, they fail to make corresponding adjustments because, well, they don't know which aspects of their campaigns need improving. It is important to study every facet of our marketing strategies. How many visitors are we generating for our website? How many of them are unique? How many are returning? How much time do they spend in our pages? Where are they coming from? To where are they exiting? These are the questions that can be answered by an excellent visitor tracking software program, and these are the questions that could help us improve the performance of our marketing endeavors.
  • Failing to find an affiliate program with a proven record of consumer satisfaction. The credibility of an enterprise depends on how people view it. If the affiliate program has established great relationships with the members of its target market, then it has established a brand that is recognizable for its excellent service and products. You'd have an easier time pre-selling such an affiliate program's products.
  • Failing to keep abreast with the latest developments in the industry. There will come a time when the marketing knowledge we know would become obsolete, more so in the field of Internet marketing where everything transpires at a rapid pace. You have to constantly update yourself with the newest trends, techniques and news in this field to always keep your competitive edge.
  • Failing to invest on knowledge. Knowledge likewise evolves and you have to evolve with it. Buy noteworthy eBooks, special reports and the likes... those that teach you the latest tactics to help you conquer your field.
  • Resting on your laurels once a semblance of success is achieved. Success is not eternal. You have to sustain it. If you leave your business alone once it shows the promise of success, you're just setting it up for failure.
  • Believing that affiliate marketing is a "get rich quick" scheme. It is not! You have to invest a certain level of commitment, a lot of time, some financial resources on occasions, and a whole lot of hard work if you want to truly realize the many wonderful things that this field does promise.
  • Bonus Tip! After writing the top ten reasons most affiliate's fail I realized that there was one more, probably the most important one of all. In my opinion the biggest reason most people fail in affiliate marketing is that they fail to Act. There are countless ways to make money online and a number of people let themselves get caught up in the research of making money and never do anything that will make them money. You can own every eBook that is on the Internet but if you never put any of the information to use they are just electronic paperweights.

Why So Many People Don't Achieve Affiliate Marketing Success

More people are drawn into affiliate marketing everyday; chances are you are one of them. Affiliate marketing is one of the best ways to generate a full time income online. It is a fair deal between the merchant and his affiliate because both benefit from the sale made. A great deal of the profits depends on how much and effectively the affiliate advertises the product. Everyday the competition grows so as an affiliate it is a must to come up with creative and powerful ways to convince potential buyers to buy the product.

Compared to traditional advertising practices, affiliate programs are more effective, risk-free and cost-efficient. But why do many people still fail in affiliate marketing? There are a lot of reasons and areas to look at. The most important piece in affiliate marketing is promoting and advertising. Many people fall short in this aspect because they lack commitment and hard work, which is the most important thing in this business. Affiliate marketing is not just directing people to a website. You have to invest time and hard work. The competition is extreme and customers nowadays are very wise as well.

Lack of preparation is also a reason why one fails in affiliate marketing, whether he is a merchandiser or an affiliate. Researching is one of the first things that you should start doing. You have to know what to look for in a good affiliate program. The merchandiser site's visitors must be targeted traffic and interested in the product. On the other hand, the affiliate marketer must research an superior affiliate program and find good paying merchandiser before he signs up.

The website is a very important tool in the whole affiliate program. As an affiliate you should know how your site is going to look. From the layout to the content to the ads, it is vital that you make the website aesthetically appealing. Some people are very meticulous about what they see at a first glance. If they find your site is ugly, then they won't continue on with your site, thus resulting in no sales. Affiliate marketing with rich content are the ones who thrive in this business. Websites with entertaining content as well as down to earth point of view help you increase your sales dramatically and makes you money even when you are asleep.

A domain name is one of the most important part in order to achieve affiliate marketing success. Before you decide on a domain name, find out what you are going to promote. Many fail because they pick a domain name that isn't relevant to what they are selling. The customer might think that site is not relative and in return won't enter the site.

An affiliate marketer must be prepared to learn more everyday. Although the idea of affiliate marketing remains the same, the techniques often change. You have to be willing to grow in the business and improve your marketing strategies. In order to achieve affiliate marketing success you much take time to learn the ins and outs of the business. Continue to improve your knowledge especially with the basics in affiliate marketing ranging from advertising to programming, web page development, and search engine optimization techniques. Likewise, study the needs and wants of your site users and how different merchandisers compete with each other.

If your first attempt at affiliate marketing goes south do not quit. Quitting is the number one reason why people fail on making money on the Internet. When you start out as an affiliate, don't expect to get rich over night. This is a business and like every business it takes time and effort to achieve success. Work on your advertising strategies and be patient. You'll never know how much you can get if you don't persevere.

Becoming An Affiliate - The Newbie Guide

If you are thinking about jumping into the affiliate game, you are what is known as a newbie. Don't worry about. Everyone started somewhere.

First things first - how does an affiliate program work? Well, the basic idea is that you get paid if a person you send to the site of a company offering the program takes some action desired by the company. You might automatically think that this means they have to buy something, but some companies will pay you merely if they visit the site or just request information. Google Adsense, for instance, pays you by the click. Make sure to read the fine print of the affiliate program to be sure.

The next issue is understanding your budget. Most people start out with little or no money, so you need to create a web presence on the cheap. This means you probably want to start with a free hosting service. These services are a dime a dozen and we don't really have any particular recommendations. Why are they free? They usually place some ads on your site. Obviously, you want as few ads as possible.

Another option that is popular is to go with a free blog program. Everyone has their favorite, but is pretty popular and easy to use. The program is owned by Google, so it has a certain amount of credibility. You can use the program to write articles and generate traffic through having people sign up to follow your blog. Within the body of your blog, you can place ads and such include Google Adsense.

Regardless of the approach you take, you are going to need to figure out a way to generate interest in your site or blog. Simply put, how do you get people to visit it and, subsequently, click through to the companies you are promoting? As you can guess, an entire library of books have been written on the subject.

If you have no or little money, which is usual, the best option is to start writing and publishing articles. If you follow their guidelines, these sites will accept your articles. People can then read them and visit your site. Alternatively, other websites can republish your articles on their sites so long as they credit you with a link to your site. People who visit their sites can then click through to yours as well - another way to generate traffic.

The Secrets of Winning the Affiliate Marketing War

It's a fact that 95% of people trying to make money in affiliate marketing never earn any money. In theory affiliate marketing sounds as a very easy concept. Find a product that people want, and present this product to the right people. The rest of the process should be downhill - but it's not. What are the problems you're facing as an affiliate marketer? Remember you are just one of many marketers who are trying to sell the very same product to the very same consumers. If you are determined to win this war, you must have a plan to get your share of the market.

It is hard work

Most people are lazy but you're not going to succeed in this type of marketing without some hard work. Any successful affiliate marketer can tell that it takes daily promotion of the product to get any kind of results. What kind of promotion should you be doing? If you're on a low budget here's some of the tools you should try to master:

  • Email marketing
  • Forum marketing
  • Making a lens on
  • Blogs - your own blog or making comments on other blogs
  • Article writing
  • Writing small free reports
  • Posting ads on USfreeads
  • Posting ads on Craigslist
  • Posting a video on or FreeIQ

Your goal should be to do at least three of these activities every day.

Make people trust you

Most people don't buy the first time you present a product to them, so it's very important to keep the conversation going. This mean you have to build an email list of people interested in your type of product. It's been said again and again - build a list, but a resent study showed that 50% of affiliate marketers don't have a list. Having a list is crucial to any success in online marketing. People will buy from you if they get a chance to know you through your email list.

Give and you shall be given

Building an email list of interested subscribers is not that difficult but it takes time and some effort. When you have a list, don't try to make them buy in every email you send to them. Give something for free - a useful tip, a small report, a link to a great website. When people find out that you really care and that you are a person they can trust, then you have a much higher chance of selling your product or products to them.

Copy what works

Study how other successful affiliate marketers promote a product - and copy their promotion process. Rewrite it, make it your own - but based on principles you know that works. If you see an article you like - rewrite it in your own words. If you see a great ad for your product - rewrite it and use it. Did you find a great small report? Do some more research, rewrite it and give it to your email list.

Don't give up

Affiliate marketing is hard work but it is possible to win the war or at least get a fair share of the market you're targeting. It's important to keep promoting on a daily basis using all the free tools mentioned earlier in this article. Remember, take good care of your paid customers - this is the most valuable asset you have in your affiliate business. Keep them on a separate email list. A customer who trusted you and bought a product on your recommendation will probably be much easier to sell to in the future.

Marketing 101 - Choosing a Price Point

Here's my story: In 1999, affiliate marketing was still pretty new. I was working as the webmaster for an ecommerce site and part of my responsibilities was to run the monthly affiliate sales report so commission checks could be cut. The ecommerce segment was home goods and the top affiliate usually earned around $800 a month. Running that report month after month and seeing that money go out was enough to convince me that I needed to get into the affiliate game. I also wanted to grow my web development skills. So building an affiliate site seemed like the perfect way to do both.

I'm a geek. I like computers and role playing games and science fiction books and movies. So I figured my site would be a site for book reviews: database backend, searchable and all that. I started building it in the summer of 2000, teaching myself ASP and SQL as I went along. The site went live in early 2001 and I started writing and loading book reviews. Each review also had affiliate links to Amazon and Barnes and Noble. I kept adding review, traffic grew (albeit slowly)m and occasionally a visitor clicked through one of the affiliate links and bought something. A little bit of change headed my way. A very little bit.

I've been running the site for almost 7 years now, but it didn't take me long to figure something out from running it, something that has driven all my other affiliate marketing efforts since.

The average paperback goes for about $7. The commission (average 7%) on a $7 paperback book is 49 cents. 49 cents! So all I needed to do was sell 10,000 books a month and I could quit my day job. Like that was going to happen. You have to sell a lot of books at that rate to make anything even resembling an extra income.

So here's the lesson, the fruit of my labors, sliced and sugared for your consumption, which I call the Law of Selling Something:

If someone is looking to buy a book, you can sell them a book. They know how much a book costs and are mentally prepared to spend that amount and not much more. If someone is looking to buy a DVD player, you can sell them a DVD player. They know how much a DVD player costs and are mentally prepared to spend that amount and not much more. If someone is looking to buy a computer monitor, you can sell them a computer monitor. They know how much a computer monitor costs and are mentally prepared to spend that amount and not much more.

So the Law boils do to this: it's much, much easier to sell someone something they are looking for regardless of the price than it is to sell them something they aren't looking for. Almost universally, this means it's just as easy to sell someone something that costs around $100 as it is to sell them something that costs around $10, provided they already knew what they were looking for costs around $100. And the commission on a $100 sale is (duh) 10x the commission on a $10 sale.

If you are considering selling something online, either for yourself or through an affiliate relationship (especially with an affiliate relationship!), take a hard look at the price point of what it is you want to sell.

Sell a book for $7 at 7% and you make .49 cents.
Sell a DVD player for $100 at 7% and you make $7.
Sell a computer monitor for $200 at 7% and you make $14.

It's as easy to sell a computer monitor to someone looking for a computer monitor as it is to sell a book to someone looking for a book.

From my years of doing the affiliate things, I've noticed the best-option price point is somewhere around $100. That is to say, the average consumer will spend $100 without an overdone amount of research and too much consideration. Anything much more than that and they're going to be more careful with the purchase, anything much less and the affiliate return won't be worth it the effort it takes to market and sell it.

By the way, my book review site,, is still up and running and doing around 500 visitors a day. In a typical month, I sell about 50 books. This earns me, on average, around $25. Too bad I didn't start with a computer monitor review site instead!
