Now the final trick to this is to forward your new domain name to your affiliate link. You do this via the domain name registrant site (GoDaddy, or whatever). With your easy-to-remember domain name forwarding to your hard-to-remember affiliate link, you have it made. Anyone who enters your new domain name into a web browser will go immediately to the website that sells the product you are promoting. They never see "your website", because it is forwarding directly to your affiliate link.

I like to identify products with a Gravity of between 100-150. This means it is a popular product that is selling but the market is not saturated with competitors.

I will then check out how much commission is being paid. I am looking at a range between $75 and $25. More than $75 is a tough sell because potential customers may not be willing to take a risk on a higher priced item. If it is less than $25 I will generally leave it alone because it can be difficult to make a profit. It does of course depend on your promotion strategy.

The next thing to check is refunds. If the product is suffering a high degree of refunds i.e. more than 15% I will keep clear of it. Do investigate the cause though becasuse sometimes the figures can be misleading. Actually you should query any anomaly you see cropping up. Spend some time in the Clickbank Marketplace and these will become apparent as you become more familiar.

Finally I'm going to check out the sales letter - would I buy based on the copy? You also want to check that a refund policy is available to those not satisfied with the product.

In the online world, Affiliate Marketing is one of the new frontiers for generating money from home. As with any method of producing wealth, it actually does take some amount of effort and work. If you are looking for a phony get-rich-scheme-in-thirty-minutes, look some place else. This column intends to explain how a person can successfully make money through affiliate marketing. For this purpose, I have compiled a list of 10 steps based off people who have struck success. Study, put the time in, follow this procedure and the money will follow in due time.

What is Affiliate Marketing?: In short, you write reviews about products and topics that are marketable, and then send them to websites that publish product reviews. If your articles are well written, and you advertise well, then they should gain popularity and search engines will soon pick them up. Every time someone who is referred from your article purchases the product, you the author of the review gets a large cut of the money made from the sale (normally 50-75%). After writing an article or so a day, after about 4-6 months time a steady flow of income should begin to appear. Step 6: Write a quality article. To rehash an old adage: quality first, quantity second. Simply put, if you write junk then no one is going to spend time reading it. After finishing the article ask yourself, would I want to read this? Again, for help look to see what others are writing about on the same product and improve upon what they are saying, maybe even combine info from multiple sources into something more comprehensive. Step 7: Keyword research. When you enter a word or phrase into a search engine, that is called a keyword. How they function is that the author of an article list several keywords when he submits it to publishing sites. Hence finding the best keywords is crucial for generating traffic to your article, and thus making money. When deciding your keywords, you'll have three main considerations in mind. First and most obviously, the keyword must be relevant to the product you are reviewing (if you are writing about a fishing product, it should be related to fishing etc.) Second, if you choose keywords that are too popular then your article is going to get buried and no one will ever find it (thus the word 'fishing' by itself is too general.) Third, your keyword choices shouldn't be too specific in which no reasonable person would type it in a search engine (for example, "green and pink fishing rod with poka-dots") So, what is recommended is using keywords that are neither too popular or too unpopular. Step 8: Publish your article! For this, you want to submit your article to several article publishing sites. Some sites that I recommend are: hubpages.com, squidoo.com, and EzineArticles.com. This is another way of generating more traffic to your reviews via your website.)

Step 9: Research which articles you wrote are most successful.One way of doing this typing the name of your article in quotes on the Google search engine (for example, "Affiliate Marketing Guide in 10 Steps"). Partway down the page look for something similar to: "Results 1 - 10 of about 1,360." The last digit (in this case 1,360) is the number of times your article has been citied on the web. The purpose of this is to see which articles are most successful, which in turn gives you a clearer idea what kind of products you may want to write more about in the future.

Step 10: Don't stop reading. Reading this article is just the beginning. Now you will need to familiarize yourself with the terms and ideas relevant to the online marketing field, and the only way to do that is to read as many articles as you can.

Let me share my experience with you. How I decided to pursue affiliate marketing because I believe earning money online is not achievable. There are few things more annoying than those moments when you've put in a considerable amount of effort, sweat, mental anguish and pain in promoting an affiliate program product just to get cheated out of your hard-earned commission by of all things the affiliate program itself!OUCH! Now that's a low blow indeed! Sure who doesn't know that there are and will always be wily marketers ready to pounce on your affiliate Id and swap it with theirs if you haven't disguised or cloaked it (and no this is not an article promoting affiliate cloaking software...all the ones I have ever bought never ever worked! If you truly want to mask your links for free go to tinyurl.com) But back to the problem on hand...getting conned by the affiliate program itself?

So let's break it down and see how this can happen. Let me add here that just occasionally by the way, such scenarios are the results of a mistake, but more often than not it is done intentionally. The real kicker though is that those websites offering affiliate programs designed to enrich the merchant yet leave you, the affiliate, out in the cold are legally well within their rights; i.e., you can't go blabbing to the web police crying foul play and expect any retribution or justice so the onus is on you to sniff out those sneaky merchants.

Case Of The 7-Day Affiliate Cookie Versus The 15-Day Free Trial!

Huh? A 7-Day cookie yet the merchant is offering a 15-day free trial! Can you see what's wrong with this picture? But just in case you don't, let me clarify things by explaining what cookies are. Simply put, a cookie is a harmless piece of computer code or script that captures harmless information (such as identifying a computer through current and subsequent visits, websites visited and date of visit). This is of importance to you because this is how a merchant can tell that a particular customer who purchased from them was referred by you, thus ensuring you get your commission. The importance of cookies does not stop there.

There're cookies and there are cookies! Cookies are coded to expire after a set period of time. So if a merchant supplies you (the affiliate) with cookies programmed to expire after 120 days, this means that if one of your referrals makes a purchase anytime within those 120 days, you'll get credited for that sale and get paid your commission. Remember, it generally takes at least several instances of exposure to a product before a person is ready to buy! So the longer lasting the cookie, the better...at least from your point of view as an affiliate.

Right, so let's take a closer look at the merchant website that offered a 7-day cookie for its affiliate program yet at the same time offers its visitors a 15-day free trial period of the product. I'm sure you've caught on to the scam now...there's no way that you are going to get any commission because by the time the prospective buyer (who originated from your website through your affiliate link) is ready to purchase once their 15-day free trial is up, the cookie encoded with your affiliate link would have already expired!

So what can you do in such a case? If you really like the product and feel quite strongly about promoting it, you could contact the merchant and inform them that you'd love to promote their product but you happened to notice that they also offered a co-existent 15-day free trial period. Politely point out to them that that 15-day free trial effectively nullifies any possibility of you being able to generate any commissions with a 7-day affiliate-link cookie in place. Then graciously ask if they could extend the cookie duration to a 30-day period which should at least make it possible for you to actually get awarded your rightful commissions.

Nine times out of ten the reply (if you get any at all) is going to be NO unless you are a heavy hitter with an impressive volume of traffic or an extensive subscriber list...and if you also have evidence to backup your claims of heavy-hitter stardom . If, however, you still get a negative response or no response at all then don't waste any more time and simply move on and forget all about promoting that program, unless you are a natural born altruist (a selfless person dedicated to help others at no personal gain).

The Multi-Pay Option Game

This is another sneaky way in which you can be duped out of your rightful commissions, although this is not as deadly effective as the free-trial-period scam. Okay let's consider a scenario in which you're promoting an affiliate product listed at Click Bank (probably the largest online directory listing of digital marketing products available for affiliate promotion). A scenario such as this would have you send visitors from your site to the merchant's website via a link encoded with your Click Bank affiliate Id (the click bank Id is part of the cookie encoded with your affiliate information enabling them to distinguish that it was indeed you who referred the purchaser.)

In an ideal situation, the prospect who you referred would then purchase the product and hey you just got commission! But what if the sneaky merchant gives that prospective buyer another payment option on their landing page, such as payment through PayPal? Your referral might decide hmmmm, lemme use the funds in my PayPal account instead...and just like that your commission is gone! As I pointed out earlier, this method does not cheat you out of your commissions as effectively as the free-trial one above, because in this case you have a 50/50 chance of getting your commission but in the other case you basically have none!

Marketing 101 - Choosing a Price Point

Here's my story: In 1999, affiliate marketing was still pretty new. I was working as the webmaster for an ecommerce site and part of my responsibilities was to run the monthly affiliate sales report so commission checks could be cut. The ecommerce segment was home goods and the top affiliate usually earned around $800 a month. Running that report month after month and seeing that money go out was enough to convince me that I needed to get into the affiliate game. I also wanted to grow my web development skills. So building an affiliate site seemed like the perfect way to do both.

I'm a geek. I like computers and role playing games and science fiction books and movies. So I figured my site would be a site for book reviews: database backend, searchable and all that. I started building it in the summer of 2000, teaching myself ASP and SQL as I went along. The site went live in early 2001 and I started writing and loading book reviews. Each review also had affiliate links to Amazon and Barnes and Noble. I kept adding review, traffic grew (albeit slowly)m and occasionally a visitor clicked through one of the affiliate links and bought something. A little bit of change headed my way. A very little bit.

I've been running the site for almost 7 years now, but it didn't take me long to figure something out from running it, something that has driven all my other affiliate marketing efforts since.

The average paperback goes for about $7. The commission (average 7%) on a $7 paperback book is 49 cents. 49 cents! So all I needed to do was sell 10,000 books a month and I could quit my day job. Like that was going to happen. You have to sell a lot of books at that rate to make anything even resembling an extra income.

So here's the lesson, the fruit of my labors, sliced and sugared for your consumption, which I call the Law of Selling Something:

If someone is looking to buy a book, you can sell them a book. They know how much a book costs and are mentally prepared to spend that amount and not much more. If someone is looking to buy a DVD player, you can sell them a DVD player. They know how much a DVD player costs and are mentally prepared to spend that amount and not much more. If someone is looking to buy a computer monitor, you can sell them a computer monitor. They know how much a computer monitor costs and are mentally prepared to spend that amount and not much more.

So the Law boils do to this: it's much, much easier to sell someone something they are looking for regardless of the price than it is to sell them something they aren't looking for. Almost universally, this means it's just as easy to sell someone something that costs around $100 as it is to sell them something that costs around $10, provided they already knew what they were looking for costs around $100. And the commission on a $100 sale is (duh) 10x the commission on a $10 sale.

If you are considering selling something online, either for yourself or through an affiliate relationship (especially with an affiliate relationship!), take a hard look at the price point of what it is you want to sell.

Sell a book for $7 at 7% and you make .49 cents.
Sell a DVD player for $100 at 7% and you make $7.
Sell a computer monitor for $200 at 7% and you make $14.

It's as easy to sell a computer monitor to someone looking for a computer monitor as it is to sell a book to someone looking for a book.

From my years of doing the affiliate things, I've noticed the best-option price point is somewhere around $100. That is to say, the average consumer will spend $100 without an overdone amount of research and too much consideration. Anything much more than that and they're going to be more careful with the purchase, anything much less and the affiliate return won't be worth it the effort it takes to market and sell it.

By the way, my book review site, SFReader.com, is still up and running and doing around 500 visitors a day. In a typical month, I sell about 50 books. This earns me, on average, around $25. Too bad I didn't start with a computer monitor review site instead!

Chances are, you didn't receive a commission check for recommending any of those things, but you can now earn a generous commission by recommending the products of other Internet marketers as one of their affiliates.

The term "associates" is also sometimes used, but it means exactly the same thing. You are referring potential customers in exchange for a commission if they buy something.

Affiliate programs have flourished on the Internet, largely due to the ease with which they can be created and operated and the relative ease with which someone can arrange to become an affiliate.

There are three basic ways to become an affiliate. The easiest way, both for the affiliate and for the vendor is what is known as automatic affiliate enrollment. That means that to become an affiliate, you don't have to formally join anything or fill out an opt-in form. This approach has become extremely popular recently, largely due to the hugely popular script called the $7 script developed and promoted by Jonathan Leger.

That script allows anyone to append a Paypal address to the URL of the product's sales page and when some buys from that link, the affiliate's commission is deposited directly into his or her Paypal account.

Moreover, these are very high-quality leads, because they are actually qualified buyers who have just proven that they are interested in the niche in which I'm doing business.

Even if I give my affiliates most of the profit on the initial sale, if I make ANY profit at all, my cost of acquiring the lead is then actually less than ZERO. As the owner of an affiliate program, this system works very well for me. Even in the worst case, where I give an affiliate 100% commission, my cost of acquiring the lead is still essentially ZERO.

One of the many great benefits of offering downloadable information products is that the cost of production and distribution is close to ZERO. So, if I promote a product through affiliates, my cost for producing, promoting, and distributing it is close to ZERO. This is especially true for products promoted through Clickbank, which provides an easy and efficient way for prospective affiliates to find out about and promote my products.

Affiliate marketing is also a great opportunity for affiliates, who are spared the need to develop or procure the product or create a sales page. Moreover, affiliates don't even need a merchant account, which is often difficult to obtain when just starting out. Now if you don't get the power in this system I'll explain. The power is in the tell a friend script. That's why you need to make them an offer they can't refuse. This creates endless opportunities for a sell. If the program you are promoting has a good enough sales page you'll definitely get some sales. This is great because the viral effect is endless.

*NOTE* I did not say you will bring in $350 your first day. It Won't! It takes a few days to a few weeks to build momentum. This is the snow ball effect. It also depends on how quickly you generate traffic.

There's nothing new, flashy or glamorous about these basic steps, but they are sure to result in targeted traffic. There are other faster ways to build traffic, but these tips will build you a stable, honest site over time. Don't be overwhelmed, just do something every day, knowing that everything you do will last and grow organically.

1.) Sending the potential customer directly to your Affiliate sales page

This might seem strange to most new affiliate marketers. You may be thinking "why would I want to send my potential customer directly to the merchants sales page I am promoting?"

There are a few very good reasons for this. That person could click through your affiliate link then five seconds later they may leave that page for whatever reason. This is not what you want to happen! You have worked hard to get your affiliate link in front of a potential customer interested in the product you are promoting and they left. The worst part is that they could return later by typing in the URL they saw on top of the page leaving the part that makes it your affiliate link out.

This bring me to the next mistake which goes hand in hand with this mistake.

2.) Not having the proper tools (web hosting, domain name and autoresponder)

My guess is 80% of the people who just read "web hosting and domain name" are now surfing YouTube. Do not be scared of having a website! You do not need to create your very own 100, 000 page content site all you need is a simple 1-5 page website to collect "leads" to build your mailing list. By doing this you can first collect a "lead" (someone who is interested in the niche you are advertising for) and after they are subscribed to your list you can promote various products in that niche to them over and over again.

Anyone who isn't serious enough to buy web hosting, a domain (.com name) and a membership to an auto responder service isn't likely to make it very far as an affiliate marketer anyways.

Trust me, you will make back that small investment in no time.

3.) Not knowing enough about the product you are promoting

After you get your web hosting, domain and auto responder make sure you stufy up on the product you are promoting. I see way to many people promoting products that they have no idea what they are talking about! The people on your mailing list will think you are a joke not to mention if you recommend products that are garbage you are going to lose their trust. That is the last thing you are going to want to do for your affiliate marketing business.

4.) Signing up for too many affiliate programs

Number 4 is a no-brainer if it's a bad idea promoting one bad product that you know nothing about it not a good idea to promote 15 bad products that you know nothing about.

Take number three seriously and buy the products you are promoting or at very least read the sales page a few times to learn what this product is going to do you're your mailing list subscribers.

5.) Not using link cloaking/link redirection
